Morocco plans 500 MWp C&I solar rooftop initiative

Morocco plans a 500-MWp rooftop solar programme as part of a national push to scale up clean power in commercial and industrial (C&I) facilities, backed by a bilateral climate cooperation framework with Switzerland.

The Solar Rooftop 500 programme, known as SR500, has been officially authorised by the governments of Morocco and Switzerland under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, according to Africa Climate Solutions, which is coordinating and managing the initiative.

The initiative focuses on self-consumption installations and includes measures designed to overcome the high upfront capital requirements, as well as the technical and organisational challenges companies encounter when deploying solar energy solutions.

SR500 is designed to deploy up to 500 MWp of grid-connected rooftop solar installations by 2030, with a focus on projects smaller than 3 MWp in Morocco’s commercial and industrial sectors.

The authorisation allows emissions reductions generated by the programme to be transferred as internationally transferred mitigation outcomes, or ITMOs, and counted toward Switzerland’s nationally determined contribution.

Africa Climate Solutions is responsible for structuring, managing and implementing the programme in partnership with the KliK Foundation, Morocco’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development and Swiss authorities. Total investment mobilised under SR500 is expected to approach USD 500 million
